Most people think of holidays as a break from work a time to switch off, recharge, and maybe take a few pictures for the family album. But the truth is, a holiday can do much more than just give you a tan or a new set of memories. It can transform your health, your relationships, your perspective, and even your future decisions. Whether it’s a weekend in Nyanga or a week by Lake Kariba, a holiday has the power to improve your life in surprising ways.
Mental health is now a major talking in all aspects nowadays and it is now just as important as other aspects in your life. Sometimes an escape from the hustle and bustle of the fast paced life might be all that you need for that boost and rejuvenation. Traveling to a new environment especially somewhere peaceful lowers stress hormones like cortisol. Even a short escape to the Eastern Highlands can help you feel lighter and more focused when you return.
Let’s be honest the gym is not always as fun and exciting but you cannot stop because you do not have the enthusiasm or adrenaline for it. So, what do you do? Imagine going on a quiet peaceful hiking trail with a beautiful view of the entire land beneath you. Exploring Victoria Falls or hiking Matobo Hills naturally gets you moving. Physical activity during holidays boosts your heart health and energy levels.
Relationships are difficult and sometimes to rekindle companionships requires a change of environment. I personally owe this idea of a road trip my life because my relationship was hanging on by a thread and who knew sometimes all it took was a weekend get away, with no form of technology to spark again that flame. I am now a firm believer that shared travel experiences deepen bonds, and even if it does not, no one can take away the effort you put in. Whether it’s family, friends, or a partner, memories made during a trip last far longer than the souvenirs.
About three years ago a friend of mine went on a family vacation outside the city, he called me one day and said i want to be a photographer. My normal reaction was to laugh it off, since our friendship dynamic is mainly comprised of banter. The second time he said it i knew the seriousness of what he was saying, long-story short three years later he is considering doing photography full-time. So, a stay in a quiet lodge could introduce you to birdwatching, photography, or local cooking hobbies you might carry into your daily life and be happy.
I firmly believe everyone possesses a hidden talent but it takes you to discover it; imagine scheduling a little sip and paint at your Air bnb bungalow and discovering you have the hand and brushstroke of Picasso. Maybe not be Picasso but an artist might definitely notice your potential. Changing your surroundings refreshes your mind. Artists, writers, and entrepreneurs often return from holidays with fresh ideas.
I am big on planning, down to the last minute detail especially during travelling. While others anticipate a good time on the road I map out routes with nearby filling stations, garages and so on. However, I can admit even when you plan things can take an unexpected turn and that may require some thinking outside the box. Travel doesn’t always go according to plan. Navigating challenges like delayed buses or missing luggage builds resilience and adaptability.
We all want to visit Paris, experience the nightlife of Tokyo, overlook the Grand Canyon, and so on yet we have not even experiences our local natural wonders. Zimbabwe has amazing some hotspots some known, some not quite known; nothing beats a sunset picture at Binga beach, or a birds eye view from our own version of the Grand Canyon in Gonarezhou Chilojo. There is a sense of pride and appreciation in travelling to all the corners of your country especially when you know your money directly supports Zimbabwean families and communities.
The body sleeps well when its more relaxed, so imagine waking up to sound of…….. ‘nothing’ maybe just distant birds chirping and the wind gently blowing the curtain. No early alarms waking you up, no panic because you did not hear your alarm going off. A break from your usual schedule plus less screen time helps reset your sleep cycle.

Seeing life from a different perspective makes you appreciate what you have back home and quite honestly the benefits are immense.
When go on holiday you learn to be in the moment and realise the true meaning of life because holidays allow you to be present whether it’s watching a Kariba sunset or sipping tea in Chimanimani.
